Choosing a tour

What matters on a long day trip

Table of Contents

The train does not start in Milan

The Bernina Express does not leave from Milan. On an organised trip, a coach or minibus takes you first to Tirano or another boarding point. The rail section begins there. The return to Milan may also be by road and should be explicitly included in the offer.

Distinguish the Bernina Express from the Bernina Railway

A tour’s name alone does not identify the train. A Bernina Express trip uses the reservation-only panoramic coach. A Bernina Red Train or Bernina Railway journey may use an ordinary regional service. Both cross the same landscape, but differ in seating, flexibility and stopovers.

Lake Como, St Moritz or Diavolezza

Some tours concentrate on the railway and St Moritz. Others add Lake Como, Diavolezza, a meal or further stops. More destinations do not necessarily mean more time at each one. Read the sequence and stated visit time in full.

Independent journey or organised tour

An independent journey gives you more choice of train and stopovers. You must, however, connect the journey to Tirano, the cross-border railway and your return travel yourself. A tour joins these parts together but follows a fixed itinerary.

Common questions

Does the Bernina Express leave directly from Milan?+

No. The Bernina Express railway does not begin in Milan. Organised tours first travel by road to Tirano or another boarding point.

Does every tour include the panoramic coach?+

No. Some offers use the Bernina Express and others use a regional train on the Bernina Line. The description should state the exact train type.

Can I arrange the journey myself?+

Yes. You would book travel to Tirano, the chosen rail section and the return journey separately. Compare the connections with the fixed itinerary of a tour.

Does the itinerary fit your plans?

Check the meeting point, rail section and return time before choosing a tour.
