Who can buy a Swiss Travel Pass?
The Swiss Travel Pass is a visitor product for travellers whose permanent residence is outside Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. During inspection, the pass is valid only with an original passport or official identity card. SBB does not accept a photograph or copy of the document.
The standard pass covers 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days and is available in 1st or 2nd class. Choose the Flex version if you want gaps between travel days within one month. It is a separate product with different activation rules, not merely another checkout setting.
What does the Swiss Travel Pass cover?
Within the official validity area, the pass provides unlimited travel by train, bus and boat, plus local public transport in more than 90 towns and cities. SBB also lists scenic trains, explicitly excluding any required seat reservation or supplement. Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos are included on the current SBB product page; many other mountain trips receive a discount rather than free travel.
The official validity map is therefore the essential boundary. The product name does not mean that every tourist railway, cable car or special service is covered. Check the exact segment before an expensive mountain excursion. The mountain railway guide links to each product page.
Which duration should you choose?
Count only the days on which you can use the pass. A Zurich-Lucerne-Interlaken-Montreux itinerary with daily changes of base can suit a consecutive pass. If you stay in one place and spend several days walking without public transport, those quiet days still consume validity on the standard pass.
Class applies to the travel ticket. A 1st-class pass alone is not sufficient for Excellence Class on the Glacier Express, which has separate product and reservation requirements. A panoramic seat booking also does not upgrade a 2nd-class travel ticket.
Children and young travellers
SBB sells a Youth version for travellers under 25 and separate child products. A traveller’s own children aged 6 to under 16 can travel with a free Swiss Family Card when they are added to a parent’s pass during purchase. Children under 6 do not need a ticket under the current SBB rule. Enter ages and family relationships correctly in the checkout.

- Set the first and last validity dates and choose standard or Flex.
- Select 1st or 2nd class for every traveller.
- Check scenic trains and mountain trips for reservations, supplements or discounts.
- Recheck the product name, passenger names, dates, class and cancellation terms.

Common questions
Can I use the Swiss Travel Pass on any chosen days?+
The standard Swiss Travel Pass covers consecutive calendar days. The Swiss Travel Pass Flex is a separate product for chosen travel days within one month.
Do I still need seat reservations?+
Not on most ordinary Swiss trains. Selected scenic and international trains can require or recommend a reservation at an extra cost.
Can I show the pass in SBB Mobile?+
SBB says a standard pass bought online while signed in can be shown in SBB Mobile. This feature does not work for Flex versions. Carry the pass and your original official ID.
Is the Swiss Travel Pass always the cheapest option?+
No. Ordinary or saver tickets and the Swiss Half Fare Card can cost less on a lighter itinerary. The pass may still be worth choosing for convenience and predictable costs.
